Cambodia and Sarawak are exploring ways to strengthen their commercial relations, focusing on leveraging their key economic sectors. Sarawak, known for its rich oil, gas, and timber resources, sees an opportunity to partner with Cambodia, which has a growing agricultural sector and emerging industries. This collaboration aims to unlock mutual economic benefits for both regions.
The intention to explore these synergies was discussed during a meeting between Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in Phnom Penh. Both leaders emphasized the importance of building stronger connections and enhancing cooperation, particularly in sectors where each has strengths. Abang Johari noted that Sarawak and Malaysia could play an important role in deepening ties with Cambodia.
Abang Johari highlighted Cambodia’s potential for further cooperation, expressing confidence that both nations could benefit significantly from closer economic ties. His visit coincided with his attendance at the Regional Islamic Da’wah Council of Southeast Asia and the Pacific (Riseap) conference, where he serves as president, providing an additional platform to discuss regional collaboration.
The talks also covered expanding cooperation in education, energy, and tourism. One notable proposal discussed was the possibility of introducing direct flights between Sarawak and Cambodia, further enhancing connectivity. Prime Minister Manet agreed that there were numerous opportunities to strengthen the relationship between Cambodia and Malaysia.
At the Riseap conference, Manet also emphasized the role of Cambodia’s Muslim community in accessing the global Islamic economy. He spoke about the growing potential of the halal market and Islamic finance and expressed his government’s commitment to advancing Cambodia’s halal industry by meeting international certification standards, ensuring it capitalizes on the global opportunities.
