Bundeswehr Inspector General Carsten Breuer said it is necessary to correct shortcomings in the preparation of the German Armed Forces for the defense of the country and NATO.
Breuer said he sees shortcomings in modernizing the German armed forces for national and allied defense.
“We now see a Bundeswehr that is not yet sufficiently equipped for this… There are “structures that make quick and targeted decisions almost impossible,” Breuer said.
He noted that for many years the Bundeswehr has been focused on resolving international crises.
But while this is now bearing fruit, Breuer says, as alliance and national defense issues come back to the fore, he is concerned about “Russia’s current arms buildup” and the way Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is positioning himself.
He noted that the days before the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine will not return and Germany will have to get used to the idea that “one day we may have to fight a defensive war.”
When asked whether the Bundeswehr will be able to cope with a possible Russian attack on NATO after the possible end of the war in Ukraine,
“Yes, period. We have no alternative. We can protect ourselves and we will protect ourselves,” Breuer replied.
Help for Germany
Germany has become one of the countries that help Ukraine by providing military, political and financial support. Berlin provided several types of artillery, older and newer Leopard tanks, IRIS-T and Patriot air defense systems, ammunition, vehicles, drones and other types of weapons.
Earlier, the German government announced that it would allocate 200 million euros to Ukraine. The money will go towards the restoration of Ukraine
It also became known that the second group of Ukrainian Patriot air defense system operators completed their training in Germany. 70 Ukrainian soldiers and officers completed the exercises. The training course lasted more than six weeks.
Let us also recall that today, December 9, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Germany will support Ukraine in the war if others weaken .
