Indonesia calls for multilateral cooperation to fight terrorism

An official of Indonesia’s National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) has stated that international cooperation in fighting terrorism is a prerequisite for realising global peace, security, stability, and prosperity.

Speaking at the recent 2024 Global Security Forum (GSF) in Doha, BNPT Deputy Director Andhika Chrisnayudhanto said Indonesia believes in the spirit of multilateralism through international cooperation to overcome the issue of terrorism.

He emphasised that multilateralism has been advocated by the United Nations (UN) with the ratification of the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy focused on preventing terrorism, strengthening international cooperation, and increasing national capacity to overcome the threat of terrorism.

In addition, the UN’s 2016 Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism also aims to strengthen international cooperation and enhance national capacities in addressing the terrorist threat.

According to Andhika, on that basis, countries have a responsibility to address the terrorist threat and enhance international cooperation through information sharing.

The official noted multilateral cooperation has brought many positive results in addressing the threat of international terrorism. Strict counterterrorism measures have contributed to reducing the influence of terrorism in Southeast Asia. However, he also expressed concern that the presence of terrorist ideologies and extremist groups in many parts of the world, and the formation of new alliances threaten global peace.

He also stressed the importance of building a common agenda and promoting international cooperation and collective action in combating terrorist threats.

The 2024 GSF is an annual event held by The Soufan Centre, an independent non-profit organization that produces research, analysis, and strategic dialogue related to foreign policy and global security challenges.
