Local safety expert gives tips on Spring Break travel

Due to recent headlines, you may be worried about how students can be safe during Spring Break. Safety experts said you can still have a good time, but staying safe starts with planning ahead.

“Study the area before you go. What are the customs there? What currency do they take? What’s the political climate over there? You don’t want to stumble into something that you know, some political rally or something that you just may not want to be a part of,” said Chris Herrera, Safety Director for Washburn University.

Once plans are made, make sure you know how you’ll get there and back.

“Know where you’re going. Know your route. If you’re going to be driving, make sure your car’s serviced. Consider using a roadside assistance app or program, or and buy something like that. If you’re going to drive at night, make sure someone is staying up with you so that you’re not driving alone.”

When you’re there, remember there’s safety in numbers. And monitor your substance use.

“If you’re going to be out to a bar or restaurant, make sure that what you’re drinking has been poured by someone you know. Don’t drink anything that you’ve left alone. If you go to the bathroom, take your drink with you. Watch after yourself. Watch after your friends. And just enjoy the spring break.”

Travel insurance can add to your security.

“If you purchase travel insurance, you will have medical coverage while you’re there, that will also lot of those insurance companies will also provide travel information and they can download your app, and use locations so that they can track you as you’re traveling through the country. That way they will send you an alert if you’re going into an area that may possibly not be safe.”
